Bear Hunting - Public Land

The Bonus Season: Spring Bear in Big Sky Country

Typical Day

Bear hunters stay with us right at camp for 6 full days. The hunt consists of 12 outings, mornings and evenings, giving you consistent opportunities throughout your trip. Whenever possible, we head back to the cabin mid-day for lunch, a short rest, and time to recharge before covering more country in the afternoon.

Your trip includes fresh, hot breakfasts each morning and home-cooked dinners every night. We make sure you’re well fed and ready for the physical demands of spring hunting.

Spring bear season can be all about timing. While mornings and evenings are often productive, movement can shift depending on weather and conditions. Your guide stays dialed in on bear activity, ensuring you’re in position when the moment comes and it’s time to let your rifle speak.

All lodging and meals are included. We use trucks, ATVs, and side-by-sides to access the mountains efficiently, then hike into carefully selected vantage points and travel corridors where bears are most active. Be prepared to cover ground as the more country we can see, the better your chances of success.

Spring bear hunting in Southwest Montana is truly something to behold. After a long winter, bears emerge with thick, beautiful coats, making this season a unique opportunity to pursue a prime hide. It’s a special bonus season we look forward to every year and a great way to get back into the mountains after winter.

Spot-and-stalk tactics are the name of the game. As bears begin moving in search of fresh green vegetation and food after months of limited activity, we spend our time glassing and covering country to locate them. It’s not uncommon to see bears at all hours of the day during the spring, which gives us excellent opportunities to plan careful stalks and get into position.

One of the most exciting parts of the season is the variety of color phases we encounter, including jet black, cinnamon, chocolate brown, blonde, and even black bears with white chest patches. Every bear is unique, and May is an incredible time to pursue a true trophy.

We maintain a strong success rate each spring by combining patient glassing, smart positioning, and disciplined stalks to put our hunters in the best possible position for a clean, ethical harvest.
