Elk Hunting - Public Land

Archery

There’s nothing quite like elk archery season in the West. Small mountain towns come alive as big game season opens, trucks loaded with camo and coolers rolling through before dawn. The air turns sharp and cool, carrying that first real hint of fall. It’s the time of year our guides wait for all summer.

Long before daylight, we’re climbing into the high country, listening for the first echoing bugle to break the dark. Bulls sounding off across timbered ridges. Steam rising from the draws. That electric moment when you know they’re close.

Preparation is everything in an archery hunt. Our guides have been glassing basins, readying equipment, and scouting travel corridors for weeks. They know where bulls are feeding, where they’re bedding, and where they like to work during the rut. When we move, it’s with purpose—slipping into the right drainage, setting up on the right wind, positioning you where opportunity is most likely to unfold.

You and your guide will cover ground, plan stalks, read thermals, and decide on the perfect calling sequence to meet whatever the moment demands. Every step is deliberate. Every setup calculated.

When it all comes together and a bull commits and closes the distance, you’ll feel it in your chest long before you ever draw your bow.

Rifle

This is the time of year orange caps get tossed onto dashboards and it’s time to let some lead fly. Fall has fully arrived with frost on the windshield, breath hanging in the air, and that steady crunch of frozen ground under your boots. The opener of rifle season is one of the most anticipated days in all of Montana.

After weeks of archery season, our guides are in full elk mode and completely dialed into the rhythm of the mountains. They’re glassing daily, reading migration patterns, and tracking feeding cycles. They know where the herds are moving and why.

Long before daylight, we’re easing into position under the cover of darkness, setting up where a bull might slip through at first light. Patience is part of the game. So is preparation. Rifle season often demands longer shots across open basins and burned hillsides—opportunities that can dramatically increase your odds when you’re ready for them.

That’s why we’re more than willing to help you dial in your rifle and gear months ahead of your hunt. Because when the moment comes, it all comes down to one steady breath and one pull of the trigger.

Our rifle hunts are special for a reason. They take place on public land, in a general zone. No frills. No fences. Just hard-earned access, preparation, grit, and determination allowing us to pursue a bull the way it was meant to be done in the West.

What to Expect

An elk hunting trip with Troutfitters is a full western adventure built around hard hunting, comfortable lodging, and exceptional meals.

Archery hunts are 6 1/2 days (13 hunts) and rifle hunts are 5 1/2 days (11 hunts), with one outing every morning and one every evening, continuing until your tags are filled. Our goal is simple: put you in the best possible position for success.

Your Stay at Camp

Guests stay in their own 2-bedroom, 2-bath riverside cabin at camp. The cabin comfortably sleeps up to four guests with four beds and is fully stocked with everything you need for the week.

After each morning hunt, you’ll return to camp to relax, get off your feet, and enjoy a large, homemade hot breakfast. In the evening, after wrapping up the hunt, a thoughtfully prepared, home-cooked dinner will be waiting for you. Our meals are hearty, well-planned, and made to keep you fueled for the demanding days ahead.

The Hunt

We use trucks, side-by-sides, and four-wheelers to access the high country efficiently. From the trailhead, we head out on foot together.

Western elk hunting involves significant hiking and elevation gain. The further you’re able to push yourself physically, the better your odds of success. We hunt hard and cover ground — that’s what it takes.
