Fly Fishing - Big Hole River

The Big Hole River offers something special from ice-off through late summer.

May and June bring big water, perfect for drift boats and exceptional streamer fishing. High flows push fish to the banks, creating exciting opportunities to target aggressive trout willing to chase.

By late June and July, the river transitions into classic dry fly season. Salmonflies crawl along the banks, followed by golden stoneflies, green drakes, evening caddis, and spruce moths. Long days, rising fish, and steady hatches define this time of year.

As summer progresses and flows drop, we switch to rafts better suited for navigating technical water. Late July and August are famous for “blanket-like” Trico and Pseudo hatches, often covering the river in clouds of tiny mayflies. Pods of rising trout demand precision with fine tippets, perfect drifts, and flies matched exactly to the naturals.

At Troutfitters, we pride ourselves on going the extra mile to find fish. Some days the trout challenge you more than others—that’s part of the reward. You’ll find us constantly adjusting—changing flies, fine-tuning presentations, downsizing or upsizing patterns until we perfectly match the bugs coming off the water—so when that slow sipper noses up along the bank, everything is exactly right. And when it is, there’s nothing better.
Typical Day
Morning water temperature is one of the most important factors on the Big Hole. We time our start in the morning to match optimal conditions. The drive is never far—our shop sits on the bank of one of the river’s most productive stretches—so we’re fishing quickly and efficiently.

We fish through the most productive morning hours until about noon, when we pull over for a relaxed riverside lunch prepared fresh for each guest. After lunch, we’re back at it, covering prime water throughout the entire afternoon.

We take great pride in offering a true full day on the river, maximizing your time on the water. That said, we’re always happy to accommodate the type of float trip you have in mind and tailor the day to fit your goals.

Our guides carry all the necessary rods, flies, and gear but you are always welcome to bring your own.

If you intend to fish for multiple days in a row, our 2 bedroom 2 bath cabin is available to rent. The cabin comfortably sleeps 4 and is steps away from the river and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your trip.
